Had to shovel mounds of snow lately? Many people have been overdoing it with these winter snowstorms and the outcomes have been torturous. If you are not in great physical shape, your body will not be prepared for the stress of shoveling snow and you may increase your chances of sustaining injuries.
Warm-up before heading outside for 10 minutes by walking up and down the stairs, or a brisk walk around the house. Do not shovel huge mounds of snow because it will be faster to clean, instead shovel smaller/lighter mounds because it is easier on the body and muscles. Take frequent breaks and make sure you hydrate the body by drinking plenty of fluids. NO CAFFEINE! Sorry, no hot chocolate either. Caffeine will dehydrate you.
Dress attire is imperative when going outside in freezing temperatures. Light layers and water repelling clothing will provide warmth and dryness. Do not wear scarves because they can block your vision making it harder to see your footing. Avoid slipping on ice by wearing boots that have slip resistant soles. Boots will provide better support for the ankle than low cut sneakers.
If you do sustain an injury, please seek medical attention right away. The longer you wait to be treated, the longer it takes the body to heal itself.
