For most of us, summer means fun in the sun. Nobody wants to be a party pooper, but the truth is that too much fun in the sun can be dangerous. Even though Americans are spending a lot of money on sunscreen, skin cancer cases are growing. In America every hour, a person dies from melanoma, the most deadly of all skin cancers. The feet are not a typical place for skin cancer, but it can happen. Because people are not looking for skin cancer on their feet, important signs are often missed. In the summer many of us wear shorts and barely there shoes. This type of clothing leaves a lot of skin on our legs and feet exposed to harmful sunrays.
The first step you can do to protect yourself from skin cancer is to use sunscreen. If you think you are using sunscreens correctly. Please think again! The government recently released new sunscreen guidelines that will go into effect next summer. UVB rays are sunrays that cause your skin to burn. UVA sunrays penetrate the skin and cause wrinkles and cancer. Buy a sunscreen that protects you from BOTH UVB and UVA rays. Everyone, even if you have darker skin, should be using a sunscreen that has an SPF of 15 or higher. If you get into the water, you need to reapply your sunscreen. Do not be fooled! There is no such thing as sweat proof or water resistant sunscreen. Remember for the best protection; reapply sunscreen every 2 hours if you are in the sun. Start from the tips of your ears and work your way down to your feet.
The next thing you can do to protect yourself is to pay attention to the skin on your feet. Remember the A, B, and Cs of skin cancerous moles:
- “A” – Asymmetry
- If you the divide the mole in half, is it uneven?
- “B” – Border
- Are the edges of the mole blurry and ragged?
- “C” – Color
- Is the color of the mole uneven?
- “D” – Diameter
- Is the mole bigger than an eraser on a pencil (6mm)?
If you can say yes to one or more of the above questions, let your podiatrist know during your next visit to the Affiliated Foot & Ankle Center, LLP with locations in Howell, Edison, and Monroe, New Jersey. The sooner your podiatrist is able to diagnose and treat your skin cancer, the better your chances of having a full recovery. Remember, your podiatrist is trained in ALL aspects of the foot and ankle, so speak up if you think the mole on your foot is not right.
There is nothing wrong with having fun in the sun, but be safe. Remember the new rules for sunscreen. Following rules in the summer may seem like a drag, but these rules may just save your life or the life of someone you love.

When was the last time you paid attention to your walk?
