What To Do When Nail Fungus Just Won’t Go Away

Nobody ever wakes up one morning and says, “It’s a good day to infect my toenails with a fungus!” But fungi are everywhere, and unless we know how to avoid them, we’re susceptible to toenail infections that can be super hard to get rid of.

Fungi thrive in dark, moist areas. So there are two excellent ways to steer clear of a fungal infection:

  • Protect your feet with shoes when walking in wet places such as locker rooms and public pool decks.

  • Avoid creating a damp environment within your own socks and shoes. Clean your feet daily, washing them with soap and drying them thoroughly, especially between your toes. If you have especially sweaty feet, you might consider changing your socks more than once a day. Finally, don’t wear shoes made of plastic or other synthetic materials that trap moisture.

Even if you do your best to keep your feet away from places where fungi can latch on, you might still get a fungal nail infection. For example, a case of athlete’s foot can spread to your toenails. Also, if you’ve got a disease such as diabetes or psoriasis, your nails are more susceptible to infection.

You can try treating your yellowed, crumbling nails with home treatments such as tea soaks and over-the-counter liquids, creams, powders, and sprays. If they don’t work, it may be because they’re not designed to attack the particular fungi you’ve got. So if you’re having trouble getting rid of nail fungus, call the board-certified podiatrists at Affiliated Foot & Ankle Center in Monmouth County, New Jersey.
