5 Surprising Ways to Improve Your Foot Health

Are you sad that our beautiful Monmouth County summer’s end is in sight? Here’s cause for celebration: National I Love My Feet Day is August 17! A special “holiday” to honor feet may be just the motivation our patients need to focus on ways to make their feet feel better. Here are five ways to improve your foot health that may surprise you:

  1. Lose weight if you need to. Too much pressure from above can cause problems like stress fractures, plantar fasciitis, and tendonitis. Your feet are built to support you, but if there’s more of you than is healthy, your feet can suffer.

  2. Get better sleep. Studies show a good night’s sleep can help you lose weight (see #1).

  3. Rotate your shoes. They’ll last longer if you don’t wear the same pair daily. In addition, they need time to dry out from sweat, or you risk creating a moist environment where fungus can thrive.

  4. Get regular pedicures. They’re not only relaxing, but pedicures keep your skin soft and supple. A good pedicure technician will gently buff away corns and calluses before they can become hard and painful. A good pedicurist is also an expert at trimming your toenails just how they should be – straight across and not too short. Be sure to go to a reputable nail salon licensed in New Jersey.

  5. Visit our podiatrists. Seeing a podiatrist is essential if you’re suffering from general foot or ankle pain or something more specific like excessively sweaty feet or a toe infection. But you might consider seeing one of our board-certified podiatrists preventatively – for example, before you begin a new sport or if you have a family history of foot problems. A complete foot and ankle examination may allow us to catch and treat any biomechanical issues that could spell trouble in the future.

Take time to love your feet – and let the podiatrists at Affiliated Foot & Ankle Center walk the path with you. Contact our offices in Howell and Jackson, New Jersey, online or call (732) 905-1110 for an appointment with Dr. Samantha Boyd, Dr. Hal Ornstein, Dr. Dan Phan, or Dr. Joseph Saka.
