5 At-Risk Groups Who Can Benefit from a Visit to the Podiatrist

International Podiatry Day, which we observe during October, is a day we celebrate here at Affiliated Foot & Ankle Center. But we also want to invite you, our valued patients, and your friends and loved ones to join the celebration. Help us spread the word about the benefits of podiatric care to a whole host of folks, especially these five at-risk groups:

1—Pregnant women

Pregnancy causes myriad changes in the body that affect the feet. The extra volume in the abdominal area changes a woman’s gait and sense of balance. Also, pregnancy produces a hormone called relaxin that helps loosen joints in preparation for giving birth. Weight gain, relaxin, and water retention can change the size and shape of the feet and ankles, making standing and walking difficult and even painful. Our board-certified podiatrists have solutions to help your feet stay more comfortable throughout your pregnancy.

2—People with diabetes

Two common complications of diabetes are nerve damage, or neuropathy, and arterial blockage, or peripheral arterial disease. Both neuropathy and PAD can trigger dangerous infections and, if not treated promptly, may lead to limb amputation. For this reason, we strongly encourage people with diabetes to visit our Monmouth County podiatry office at least once a year for a thorough checkup.

3—Senior citizens

The more miles you’ve got on your feet, the more prone to problems they become. Senior citizens risk falling if their feet hurt from bunions, fallen arches, corns, calluses, hammertoes, and thick toenails that are hard to trim. Our podiatrists have solutions for these common problems!

4—Children

Kids who have difficulty walking or are reluctant to play sports should have their feet examined. We welcome children and teens with other common foot issues, such as warts, ingrown toenails, and sports injuries.

5—Athletes

If you’re new to a sport, it’s a good idea to come in for a full foot and ankle exam to identify any problems that could cause an injury. For established athletes, we can provide relief for recurring blisters, heel pain, and other sports-related injuries.
