Helpful Hints for Diabetes Prevention Month

Any podiatrist will tell you that diabetes can seriously impact the feet. November is National Diabetes Month, so now is the perfect time to educate yourself about preventative measures and treatment options. People with diabetes are at a higher risk of developing foot complications, such as neuropathy, poor circulation, and foot ulcers

This is where podiatric services become crucial. Put your best foot forward with diabetic care! To get started, check out some helpful tips from Affiliated Foot and Ankle Center.

If you have diabetes, see a podiatrist regularly!

Everyone with diabetes should have an annual exam, no matter what. Medicare will permit most patients to schedule an appointment every two months to care for their nails and calluses. Take advantage of that. Medicare also provides diabetics shoes once a year in most cases. These shoes are fitted with special insoles that help keep your feet safe.

Check your feet twice a day!

Look for the unusual - cuts, redness, anything. If you see something, contact us right away. Do not perform "bathroom surgery," which could put you at risk of further complications. Do not put ointment on it. Do not put band-aids on it. Call us instead!

DON'T GO BAREFOOT!

As a person with diabetes, you always want to protect your feet. Wound healing is dangerous; even small cracks and cuts can harm you more than you think. Wear shoes!
